The BIG Rescue

Yesterday, I participated in a 19 dog rescue operation. 3.5 hours away from where I live. An animal shelter was going to euthanize 19 dogs at 9 am Monday morning. The shelter posted pictures of the 19 dogs on Facebook asking for people to foster, adopt and transport to save & keep them from being put down. I contacted Lab Rescues and other NO KILL shelters in Idaho and Montana and relayed all of the information to the folks that operate the shelter. I offered to drive there to help transport as many that would fit in my Subaru. I'll spare all of the logistics, hand offs, and miscommunication but all 19 were saved. I took FIVE black labs in my car and drove them 3 hours away for the next transport person to haul them to Montana today. It was a full 12 hour & emotionally draining day but I'm happy to have helped.

Animal Rescue

I'll start from the very beginning. I've had a love for animals for a long time. When I was a kid I brought home snakes, lizards, frogs, cats, & dogs wanted to keep them all. Luckily for my parents I wasn't into bugs. As I child I wanted to become a veterinarian. Later in my teens becoming a vet seemed like a bad idea. They have to see sick animals and put them to sleep! I could never do it. Props to the amazing people who work as vets! I love dogs. I love cats. I love them all and I want to help them all. Somehow. I met a friend a year ago who has the most amazing, sweet, obedient, mellow, loving Pit bull named "Doobie." I can't use enough great adjectives to describe this pooch. We currently have a 3 year old flat coat retriever mix named Charlotte. She's the Driggs Idaho ambassador. Everyone knows her and loves her. She's a nearly perfect & well behaved dog. She just came that way. She required very little training. I only say nearly perfect because she loves to have garbage parties when we leave the house. But, back to the pit bull part of the story. I wanted my own "Doobie." We weren't looking for another dog and actually didn't want one. So, I decided I would sign up to start fostering pit bulls through the Boise Bully Breed Rescue. Fostering would take care of my wanting my own Doobie while saving the life of a dog in danger of being put to sleep. After I signed up I went online, chose a dog and a week later, "Shortcake" was delivered to my door from 350 miles away. Shortcake was on death row, developing kennel stress, had been abused, had a litter of puppies at 7 or 8 months old and found as a stray by Animal Control shortly after she had puppies. She was at the shelter for 3 months after they found her. She's approximately a year old. She came to our house scared, timid, fear aggressive, had never been in a car before, cautious, nervous, didn't know her name, not housebroken, and didn't know ANY commands. I thought, "holy shit.....WHAT have I gotten myself into. This dog will NEVER be a Doobie dog." We've had her 2 months now and she has completely turned around. First, we changed her name to "Greta." It suits her. She has learned to sit, lay down, punch it (it's same as a high five), roll over, stand and bow. She actually takes a bow! She's the daintiest little pit bull you've ever seen at a whopping 35 lbs full grown. Now, if I could just teach her to sleep in her own bed instead of mine! Oh, and it's official. We've adopted her. The goofy looking white little dog is our Greta and the chunky meat pie wearing the hat & glasses is Doobie.

Chris came straight to our house after this happened. As he's telling me what happened I began coughing and sneezing from the bear mace that was in his clothing. He's lucky his grizzly bear encounter didn't end with him getting turned into hamburger meat. After he finished telling me what happened, I contacted my friend who works at the local paper & asked her if she'd be interested in a story like this. Next thing you know, Chris & Rio (his 120lb dog) are getting their picture taken for the paper! I don't think I'll ever leave my bear mace at home or in the car. It will be attached to my hip and ready to fire! (I usually never forget it anyway...)

Winter Project

When winter begins to drag ON and ON, what is a person supposed to do? Build a pirate ship in your garage. That's what our friends did. Complete with bench seat, plastic chair, waterproof radio (now on the bottom of the Teton River somewhere), and a small gas grill. Genius.

Summer Snowboarding

There is 13+ feet of snow above 9,000ft. It looks like it'll be a while before I can start backpacking in the high country.

Easter Snowboarding

It normally takes 6 minutes for the chairlift to take us to the top of the mountain, but since the resort is closed, the lifts aren't operating. We decided to take a hike up the ski hill today since the last storm system dumped 2 feet on the mountain in a matter of days. It took us a couple of hours to hike up with our snowboards strapped to our backpacks. It was a long and strenuous hike but the rewards of riding down in knee deep powder are PRICELESS! And we get to bring our dog with us!

Coachella Art

Coachella Music & Arts Festival

Last year was our first time attending Coachella Music Festival in Indio California, (near Palm Springs) and we are HOOKED for life! There are 5 stages of music, from noon until 1am, 150 different bands, 3 days, car camping, hot weather, sunshine and enough people watching to last a lifetime. I took over 400 pictures but I'll only be posting a few of my favorites on here to give you an idea of what it was like.

Grand Targhee 80's party with DJ Doubletime

The week before Grand Targhee (our ski hill) closed for the season, they threw an 80's party. What's an 80's party without neon, spandex, vintage ski racing sweaters, and moon boots?

Recent Musical Acts

Back in March, Willie Nelsons son Lukas Nelson and his band came out here to play. They play here about 4x a year because it's one of their favorite places to visit and jam with their fans. Here are a few pics from that evening and the next day.
